What final expense insurance is

Final expense insurance is a permanent life policy with a modest benefit, built to cover what it costs to lay someone to rest: the funeral home, the burial or cremation, any medical bills left open and the legal paperwork. It's the product most asked for by people over 50 who have already watched up close what happens when there's no coverage.

Its advantage is access. Underwriting is usually simplified, with a short health questionnaire and no medical exam, and it goes into force about as fast as anything on the market. That makes it workable for people who have been declined elsewhere or who don't want a long process.

Step by step

How it works, no fine print

1
We talk about the goal

No complicated math is needed: this covers a specific, known cost. I help you size it realistically.

2
I pick the company most likely to accept you

On this product the companies underwrite very differently: the same person can be accepted by one and declined by another. This is where holding several contracts counts for most.

3
A simplified application

A short health questionnaire, with no medical exam in most cases. Approval is the insurance company's decision.

4
Beneficiaries named, in writing

We name the beneficiaries and I explain to your family how to file a claim, so nobody has to work it out at the worst possible moment.

Who it makes sense for
  • People over 50 with no life coverage.
  • Anyone who doesn't want to leave the funeral bill to their children.
  • Anyone declined for other products because of their health.
  • Anyone who wants something simple, quick and affordable.
What to keep in mind
  • The benefit is modest by design: it covers final expenses, it doesn't replace a family income.
  • Many policies have an initial period with a limited or graded benefit. It's the first thing to read and I point it out to you explicitly.
  • If you're in good health, a term policy of the same amount may work out more efficiently. I'll tell you if that's your situation.
  • Approval and terms depend on the insurance company's underwriting.

Frequently asked questions

About final expense, specifically

In most cases, no: you answer a health questionnaire and the company decides from that. There are exceptions depending on the company, your age and the amount requested. I don't ask you for diagnoses or medical details; the insurance company handles that directly in its own process.

Some final expense policies pay a reduced benefit, or the premiums back plus a percentage, if death occurs within the first two or three years and wasn't accidental. Not all of them do. It's the first thing I check and I point it out before you sign.

Final expense is among the quickest products there is: in many cases it goes into force 48 to 72 hours after the application is approved. The exact timing depends on the company and I confirm it in your proposal.
